Chess & Robotics
Inter-school Chess Competition
12 chess players from Years 4 - 6 represented Russley School at the Medbury School Zones. The school had a fantastic day with the Russley A Team winning their division and the Russley B Team being placed third in theirs. It was impressive that all players had wins during the day and showed great sportsmanship.
Russley had 2 teams in the Robocup competition held at the Burnside Aurora Centre
The Rescue Team's robot had to navigate its way around a course into a green contamination area. The robot has to locate an object and remove it from the danger area. Our team completed a 'rescue' in the very first round of competition. It was exciting to watch the leader board over the remaining rounds which were played on increasingly more difficult courses.
The team were placed a very creditable 5th out of 27 teams at the end of the competition.
The Theatre Team created a 'story' for their robot to act and dance to.They designed and made the scenery and props, programmed the robot then practised the transitions between dances until they were seamless. Despite many challenges along the way, the team and their robot managed a flawless performance at the competition and were delighted with their success.
Chess Club is held in Terms 2 and 3 on Thursday lunchtimes. All students are welcome, from social beginners to the experienced players. Each year we enter several teams in the Inter-school Trust Chess competitions.
Year 5 - 8 students are offered the opportunity to learn Robotics. The students complete an application form to be eligible for the programme. Team Awa Nui students have their classes in Term 1 and Team Moana students have theirs in Term 4.
