Team 3 Spelling - Information for Parents

Our spelling programme this year is based around word lists that use commonalities to group the words. (eg. Word families). Depending on learning styles, students learn to spell in varying ways. We will be using a multi-sensory approach to teach spelling. Your child may like to practise their words each night by writing them down, spelling them out loud, or using the "Look, say, cover, write, check" method. They can also use our spelling city website to learn their words and play spelling games. Talk with your child and find out what they prefer, or try a different format each night. To begin with, their words may seem easy, but as we progress through the word lists, weekly tests measure the retention and understanding of spelling rules.

SpellingCity is a website that helps students learn their weekly spelling words while having fun at the same time. After your child has completed school spelling assessments, your child will be assigned a spelling level, based on the spelling programme that we are using this year. Your child can review and practice their words, and play spelling games to reinforce the learning process.

Here's how to help your child master his or her spelling words:  Simply go to www.spellingcity.com to see how the site works

Once you are on the Spelling City homepage, click the tab that says "FIND A LIST" Click in the circle that says "BY USER NAME"

Level 3 Spelling                        Username: Russley3
Level 4 Spelling                        Username: Russley4
Level 5 Spelling                        Username: Russley5
Level 6 and 7 Spelling               Username: Russley67

Your child's lists for their level will appear. They can then practise their words, or play games. Once you have visited the website, the next time it should remember you.

Many kids enjoy building their spelling skills with Spelling City. There are also excellent vocabulary activities that are great for confident spellers to increase their understanding of word meanings. There is also a variety of spelling lists on the site that you are welcome to use for extension.

This year your child's spelling test will be on a Friday. They will be tested on a selection of their current list, plus words from former lists. It's a good idea to spend part of the week reviewing lists from previous weeks.

Your child has had an opportunity at school to use this programme, so they should be quite independent. However, do not hesitate to come into the classroom for a demonstration of spellingcity.com on our interactive white boards, or get in touch with any questions.
